A small Stone

I saw someone today, the second time,
deeper into their long course of chemotherapy
the first time she came, she was sicker than she could bear
now she's feeling better than she has in months
“I took my kitchen apart yesterday!” she says, laughing with her self...

She'd taken a simple tonic from some herbs that were happy to lend a hand;
Echinacea, Astragalus, Panax, Withania, Licorice
these roots are the kind of friends that,
the more their strength is needed, the more they have to give
they have a force in them
something that changes what would be expected, otherwise

I see how, unless we learn to trust that force
we end up doing desperate measures when things are dire
taking such regimens of pills and products that there's hardly room to eat
fasting from our pleasures as if to atone for what's gone wrong

that force is a river
pressing, flooding against illness's dam
only a small stone may need to be moved
the river can do the rest...
