The Edge

imagine you were a beam of light
perhaps you're a particle, perhaps a wave
look, it doesn’t matter
just be a beam of light for a moment, okay?

Now, imagine you were hurtling along
as fast as you could go, as fast as anything could ever go
and that ahead of you was utterly empty space
utterly unpopulated
no light, sound, matter or being
had ever gone before into what lay ahead

Imagine that

some would say, I would say, that would be quite terrifying
but so exciting too
and perversely this thought experiment always makes me think of love
why perversely?
because surely utterly empty space is all that is the opposite of love

and what if you knew, if you really and truly knew
that every beam before you was behind you now
and would be, for ever-more?

wouldn’t it be as opposing to nature
to say “abandon all comfort”
to which in response you would naturally grab
the nearest and strongest tether to your life you could find?

well, its too late now,
little light
you’ve passed the point of comfort
let alone
being able to turn back
