the long sleep

'death and taxes are the only certainties in life'
well half of that just isn't true,
not for the 1% who hold on to most of the world's wealth
but the death part is certain, oh yes

in olden times they called it 'the long sleep’
because the moment of falling asleep is exactly like the moment of death itself ,
the ultimate surrender of consciousness

somewhere, deep in our DNA
we all instinctively know the truth of this,
and so how extraordinary,
how marvellous it is
that every living thing that
ever is and ever was
so gladly falls asleep,
again and again

and that we love it that we can,
and that we love it that we must
even though we know that
one day we just won't wake back up
